STD Testing Q & A

What are STDs?

STDs are infections transmitted during sexual contact. In rare circumstances, STDs can pass from mother to baby during birth or breastfeeding. Blood-borne STDs like HIV can also be passed through shared needle use.

Do I need to have STD testing?

If you're sexually active, you need STD testing on a regular basis. You may also need STD testing when you have a new partner, if you have symptoms of an STD, if you're pregnant, or if there's a chance you've been exposed to an STD recently.

Even if you haven't had sex in a long time, regular testing is still important. Some STDs have a very long incubation period or can stay dormant in your body for years.

The all-female team of OB/GYNs at Seasons of Life Obstetrics & Gynecology makes STD testing a smooth and easy process, so don't be afraid to ask questions or be completely honest with your OB/GYNs. The doctors’ mission is to help!

Do I need HPV testing?

Some women need an HPV test as part of their STD testing. The HPV test requires a small cell sample from your cervix, so it's often done along with a Pap smear to make it more convenient for you. HPV testing generally starts at age 30, and if you have Pap smear co-testing you may only need the test every five years.

What STDs are included in STD testing?

Your Seasons of Life Obstetrics & Gynecology OB/GYN will discuss your history, your health, and your situation with you to determine which STD testing you need. Some of the most common STDs included in testing are:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Genital herpes
  • Syphilis
  • Hepatitis A, B, and C
  • HIV

Depending on which STDs you're checking for, your Seasons of Life Obstetrics & Gynecology care provider takes a blood sample, you provide a urine sample, or both.

What if I have an STD?

If you have an STD, there are many effective treatment or symptom management options. The OB/GYNs are compassionate and understanding, and they're dedicated to making this difficult time as easy as possible for you.
